What is Paua Shell?
Paua is a species of abalone
(Haliotis Iris), with a special shell. It
is only found in the seas around
New Zealand. This marine snails
eats seaweed and lives clinging to
the rocks at depths of 1-10 metres,
normally found around most of
the NZ rocky shoreline, but it
grows biggest and best in the cold
waters around Stewart Island and
Southland.
Paua Shell Jewellery and the Environment
The Paua fishery is a sustainable fishery. Divers free dive to get the Paua from the rocks and are prohibited from using air tanks or any other
methods. Due to a quota management system with strictly enforced regulations controlling the size of paua taken, sustainability is ensured. The
future of this naturally occuring resource appears ensured. The shell is a byproduct of catching paua for the meat. By purchasing a piece of paua
shell jewellery you are increasing the value of this resource and helping ensure that it continues to be managed in a sustainable way.
About the Paua Shell
Jewellery
There are so many fantastic colours of
blues, greens, pinks, purples and reds
which all come together in the shell and
make it seem quite surreal. When I first
saw the Paua shell I could not quite
believe its shimmers and shines. No two
shells are alike and each piece of jewellery
is unique in its colouring. In the Maori
language the Paua is the name given to
the abalone species (Halitotis Iris).
Legend says that mermaids make the
jewellery themselves.
A little about me.
I’m Welsh Yay. Anyone can cuddle, but only the Welsh can Cwtch.
Things I love.
Our flag, our beautiful country, music, singing, art, dancing, poetry, rugby, hearing another Welsh accent at Leighton Buzzard, laughing,
crying, visiting as many markets as I can at home and abroad, colour, Rainbow markets, giving praise when earned, festivals and carnivals,
Christmas, my own Rainbow stall, gardening. Most of all, my lovely friends and customers, Leighton Buzzard Market, and my English
Husband!
As you can see I’m passionate about many things and I really enjoy meeting people!
With a passion for music in many styles, notably folk but with fusions of classical, country, rock and Bhangra, I have written and recorded
some of my own songs, play chromatic harmonica and keyboards and sing. I also catalogue classical music for another business that
specialises in “recycling” second-hand sheet music and books. Please take a look here olin Coleman Music
